Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Special Services, supervises special services student transportation scheduling, routing, vehicle maintenance, planning, operations, and supervision/evaluation of drivers; instructs, trains and administers policies for new and current school bus and van drivers on a regular basis.
Essential Job Functions:
Manages vehicles and drivers for the purpose of meeting daily schedule of instructional programs and extracurricular activities.
Plans for, and delivers, driver training new and continuing bus and van drivers in laws, driving techniques, and exceptional student control procedures.
Develops, implements, and enforces established safety regulations and other policies and procedures related to transportation services including maintaining training records for drivers.
Directs and monitors all scheduling of drivers, routing and supervision of all van and bus drivers.
Uses computer applications for the purpose of planning, analyzing and monitoring routes for efficiency and economy.
Coordinates assigning of substitute drivers acting as a back-up to special services drivers and bus driver when necessary for the purpose of ensuring equity in assignments.
Makes recommendations and/or decisions for equipment, personnel needs, and transportation budget for the purpose of maintaining a quality transportation department.
Develops specifications for motor vehicles to be purchased and/or to be modified for the purpose of meeting the needs of special services children.
Maintains motor vehicle service records, arranging for maintenance of vehicle fleet including preventive maintenance, ongoing service and repair for the purpose of assuring the safe transportation of students.
Maintains working relationships with various public agencies (i.e. California Highway Patrol, Department of Motor Vehicles, California Department of Education – Office of School Transportation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with current regulatory standards and conveying and/or gathering required information.
Instructs, organizes and directs drivers in regular vehicle safety inspections, making minor repairs, emergency procedures, transportation laws, policies and procedures and cleaning of vehicles for the purpose of supporting drivers in the completion of their work activities.
Updates special services drivers’ handbook and procedures for the purpose of supporting staff in the completion of their work activities.
Advises on hazards from inclement weather and road closures for the purpose of assuring the safe transporting of students.
Communicates with parents, community, administrators and teachers on routine conflicts and issues in transportation for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the issues.
Advises Executive Director of Special Services regarding assigned duties, concerns, and long range planning and develop proposed solutions.
Drives van and bus routes as necessary.
Job Requirements - Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to, or completion of, a Bachelor’s Degree. Responsible managerial position may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: Minimum five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the supervision and administration of transportation services, including route planning and driver training; minimum three (3) years School District experience is desirable.
Possession of valid Standard Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor Certificate; valid Class C Commercial Driver’s License; Valid Class B driver’s license with school bus endorsement; evidence of insurability.
